The ribbon is made up of three basic components - the ink, the ribbon and the mechanism. The formulation of the ink is of paramount importance. Lubricants have been included to ensure the life and quality of the print head, while the ink itself is put through a grinding process so intense as to eliminate any abrasive qualities which could shorten the life of the print head. The tension and weave of the Star ribbon and mechanism has been precisely matched to the printer, thereby lessening the danger of snagging, twisting or tearing. More importantly it reduces the risk of the ribbon jamming, causing permanent damage to the carriage mechanism.
