Greenpeace praises Apple

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Greenpeace has commended Apple for its commitment to improving sustainability and removing toxic materials from its gadgets.

The environmental action group said that Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs’s devotion to environmental concerns can only be a good thing.

However, Greenpeace said that Apple and other top electronics firms still face considerable challenges “on the road to truly green electronics”.

The reaction from the environmental campaigner comes after Apple published its environmental progress report on Thursday.

“I’m proud to report that all of Apple’s new product designs are on track to meet our 2008 year-end goal,” Mr Jobs wrote in the report, referring to the company’s intention to remove all polyvinyl chloride and brominated flame retardants from its products.

Meanwhile, Mr Jobs unveiled its most energy efficient laptops to date.

The new MacBooks all meet the Energy Star 4.0 energy efficiency standards and also adhere to the EU’s Restrictions on Hazardous Substances directive.

Laptop ‘must haves’

Monday, October 20th, 2008

As portable computer prices tumble PC Magazine has released a list of laptop must haves.

The list of essential additions should apply to any mainstream laptop, the tech-reviews website claims.

"If even if one of the features is missing, look elsewhere," the reviewer states.

Top of the list is a minimum of a 120GB of storage space, any device with a hard drive smaller than this should be ignored, the site adds.

Every mainstream laptop should also have a multi-media card reader, a built-in webcam and a dual-layer DVD burner "not a lame DVD-ROM/CD-RW".

"Don’t settle for anything less than a dual-core processor, preferably an Intel Core 2 Duo," the website states.

And, manufacturer’s not willing to put 2GB of memory in their computers are not worth considering either.

Meanwhile, IT World has issued a top 15 list of ways to improve the eco-friendliness of laptop, extending the devices battery life.

The tips include dimming the screen, cut down on external devices and increase the amount of RAM.

Sony projectors unveiled for Christmas

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Sony is releasing a selection of new high-end digital projectors under its Bravia brand in time for Christmas, it has been reported.

The top performer is the Bravia VPL-VW80 SXRD projector, which can output a 103-inch image at 100 frames per second – more than double the normal frame rate, according to Gizmodo.

Using the company’s Motionflow Dark Frame Insertion technology, the projector creates intermediate frames form the original video, reducing judder often experienced when the camera pans, the website states.

The projector has a brightness of 1,000 lumens and a contrast ratio of 60,000:1.

Gizmodo said: "It does not, however, run cheap with a price tag of just under £5,000.

"A more realistic offering comes in the shape of the £1,760 VPL-HW10. A Full HD projector that takes some of the technology from its higher end siblings but at a less restrictive price."

Meanwhile, Sony has launched a new James Bond experience stand at Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

Samsung confirms DSLR pans

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Digital camera manufacturer Samsung has confirmed it is to release a news digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera, it has been reported.

Speaking to What Digital Camera, the company’s director of DSLR business Young-Bae Kim said the third DSLR from Samsung would be different to previous models.

Speaking at the company’s headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, he told the camera reviewer: "The GX-20 was not very different in appearance to the GX10."

He added: "But from the GX-20 to the next model will be a much bigger change."

The new camera will be launched in the second half of 2009 and will be a similar size to the two current models, however, Mr Kim did not give the tech-news site any specifications of the new device.

Acer launches budget wide-screen laptop

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Acer’s budget laptop offering is nothing new, but it’s a solid and reliable machine, according to one reviewer.

Writing for techradar.com, Michael Browne said: "The Acer Extensa 7620Z is a big and well-built machine that makes the most of its 17-inch screen."

"Sadly, it isn’t as powerful as we were hoping," he added.

The 17-inch screen on the budget laptop, which costs £349, has a relatively low resolution of 1,440 by 900 pixels.

Acer’s latest budget portable computer was also criticised for its unresponsive keyboard, but was commended for the responsive mouse pad and buttons.

Powered by Intel’s Core 2 Duo processor the computer slows down with multiple windows open and weighing 3.5 kiloograms is lacking in portability, the reviewer states.

However, it does provide reliability on a budget, they added.

In related news, Acer has knocked Hewlett-Packard off the top spot for PC sales in the European, Middle Eastern and African markets, according to zdnet.co.uk.

New Powershot offers ‘value for money’

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

The Canon Powershot A2000 IS is lacking in the looks department but offers value for money in terms of picture quality, according to one review.

With a 6x optical zoom and a ten-megapixel sensor, the device provides good colour brightness and sharpness, according to cameras.co.uk.

The review website claims that many compact cameras struggle to take pictures with the flash without images becoming washed out, but said the IS’s flash is more than capable of providing even lighting and excellent indoor portraits.

Cameras.co.uk said: "I can’t claim that the Powershot A2000 IS is a great looking camera when compared to some of the more stylish cameras on the market.

"Based on picture quality it offers very good value for money."

Meanwhile, Canon has introduced two large format 24-inch printers aimed at professional photographers.

Both the imagePrograf iPF6000S and the imagePrograf iPF6200 can print images at a resolution of 2,400 by 1,200 dots per inch.
