Ergonomic redesign for Logitech mouse

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Logitech has shaken up its high-end computer mouse line with the new wireless MX1100.

The peripheral manufacturer will bundle the new mouse – which marks the first major peripheral redesign by Logitech in two years – with its ergonomic cordless Wave Pro keyboard.

Logitech’s latest mouse has a plethora of cutting edge features and claims to have the fastest data-transfer rate of any wireless device on the market, ensuring users do not experience jumps or delays in input.

The MX1100 comes bundled with Logitech’s SetPoint computer software, which allows users to reprogram the eight button mouse and alter scrolling and pointer speed.

SetPoint also monitors how much battery power the mouse has left.

Vice-president of product marketing for Logitech Denis Pavillard said: "Independent research clearly demonstrates that the Wave Keyboard can help improve the comfort of your typing experience."

Logitech’s Wave Pro and MX1100 bundle costs around £65 and the company claims the keyboard’s battery will last for three years.

Canon updates photo printers

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Canon has launched two new photo inkjet printers claiming they successfully blend performance and convenience.

The Canon Pixa MP480 and MP190 both have printer, copier and scanner functions and both printers use intelligent automatic cropping and saving functions to determine what is being scanned and how it should be formatted and saved.

Using its dual cartridge four-colour ink system – based on ChromaLife technology – Canon claims that photographs will last for 300 years when printed on its Photo Paper Plus Glossy II.

The printers both have maximum printing resolutions of 4,800 x 1,200 dots per inch and can print a full colour photograph in 45 seconds.

Black and white documents can be printed at a rate of 20 pages per minute and colour documents can be churned out at a rate of 16 pages per minute.

The MP480 inkjet printer has a 1.8-inch TFT screen for previewing photos before they are printed and Bluetooth technology to allow users to send their photo’s direct from their digital camera without having to connect it to the printer.

It is expected to retail for around £50.

Office exclusivity with gold keyboard

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Office workers wanting to impress their colleagues with the latest bling could do worse substantially increasing the value of their desktop PC with an authentic gold keyboard.

Coated with 100 per cent gold leaf, the Kirameki Pure Gold Keyboard, is adorned by Japanese design firm Wazakura Studios – famed for its exquisite gold leaf art.

The £191 gold keyboard is "not just a stunning object of worship", according to Kirameki, and has an adjustable-height base, two USB ports and three power cable sockets – one on either side and one in the middle.

Kirameki announced: "While gold leaf has a long artisan tradition in Japan, the craftsmen behind this glittering computer accessory have updated their technique for the rigueur of daily use, meaning the Pure Gold Keyboard is as durable as it is enviable."

Not to be outdone, computer firm Antec has released a gold leaf PC case costing £244, according to Tokyo business news and culture website Akiba Today – but sales have been slow for the made-to-order item.

Dell to compete with MacBook Air

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Reports are circulating that Dell is set to compete with Apple by offering its own super-slim notebook laptop.

According to the Economic Daily News, Dell has developed a new notebook similar to the MacBook Air and is having the laptop built at Taiwanese manufacturer Compal Electronics.

Reports that Michael Dell is set to unveil details of new Dell products at an event in New Dehli tomorrow (August 13th) have been confirmed by the Indian press.

But it is expected he will uncover a low-cost mini laptop similar to the Asus EeePC, which Compal Electronics is also expected to produce, according to Trading Markets.

Apple claims that its MacBook Air is the world’s thinnest laptop and is 1.94cm thick at its widest point.

It features a 13.3-inch screen and a full-size keyboards and weighs just 1.36kg.

Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive officer, said: "When you first see MacBook Air, it’s hard to believe it’s a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display."

Fold away offices ‘a glimpse of the future’

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Storage problems in open-plan offices could be a thing of the past with fold away office spaces and mobile storage units.

Aiming to challenge the traditional view of office furniture, Volume Products has produced a range of adaptable office spaces which can be quickly assembled by two people in under an hour.

The firm offers curved break-out cubicles and windowed meeting rooms all made from modular parts so that they can be assembled to meet the company’s exact specification.

Design director at the Huddersfield firm Mark Partridge told the Yorkshire Post: "We develop products from the inside out. We start from someone standing in an office and think what do they need around them?"

"A lot of it is driven by what we feel we need to help us work."

Research carried out by YouGov, on behalf of Microsoft, found a correlation between the number of open-plan offices in the UK and increasing working hours.

‘Worrying increase’ in spam reported

Monday, August 11th, 2008

The amount of spam landing in people’s inboxes has quadrupled in the second quarter to more than 30,000 emails, according to the latest results from a UK spamming index.

Compiled by anti-spam software company ClearMyMail, the spamming index shows that junk mail has increased from 8,156 emails in the previous quarter to 30,846 between April and June of this year.

Dan Field, managing director of ClearMyMail, has called for urgent industry action to combat the rising problem.

He said: "These statistics are becoming increasingly worrying."

"Unless internet service providers, anti-spam and anti-virus providers all work together, the quantities of hoax spam entering email accounts will just continue to rise."

According to ClearMyMail, Orange customers receive the most illicit mail with 97 per cent of their inbox traffic considered junk.

Orange made it to the top of ClearMyMail’s spamming hitlist for the second month running and Orange customer Colin Wells was named the most spammed person in the UK after receiving an average of 44,000 spam emails a day.

Will Work to Flirt be the next big thing?

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

A new reversible dress which claims to change the wearer from smart office worker to party girl is being hailed as the solution to young professionals’ wardrobe problems, according to the Telegraph.

Commissioned by DirectDating.com, the Work to Flirt dress allows the wearer to undergo a "Superman style" makeover, revealing more cleavage and showing more thigh once the working day is over.

On one side the dress is appropriate for the office, but is tailored to allow the skirt to be shortened and split for after-work dates, parties and nights out.

Designer Tansy Hamley told the newspaper: "The dress has been really well received, with women saying that it absolutely takes the hassle out of planning their date outfits."

According to a survey by Vault.com this year, nearly half of respondents said they had been involved in an office romance, reports FoxNews.

Green IT needs decent document management

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Investment in document management systems is required if the public sector wants to make its IT departments carbon neutral by 2012.

General manager of Version One Lynn Munns said that effective document management is the only way government departments will be able to reduce their reliance on inkjet printers.

The Greening Government ICT plan published by the minister for transformational government Tom Watson said that reducing the number of printers and the amount being printed is tantamount to meeting the carbon neutrality target.

Lynne Munns said: "If public sector bodies are to cut the number of printers across their organisations and reduce printing, they need to invest in document management systems."

According to Tom Watson PC and laptops are responsible for two per cent of global CO2 emissions – the same as the airline industry – and the figure is growing.

He added that turning every computer in Whitehall off at night would have the same effect as taking 40,000 cars off the road.

Lexmark X4875 ‘is happily recommended’

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Lexmark’s X4875 has been praised for producing "excellent prints" in a new review.

Carrie-Ann Skinner from PC Advisor said she was "impressed" by the features on the latest multifunction photo printer from Lexmark.

The X4875 features USB and wireless connectivity, together with PictBridge compatibility, meaning pictures can be printed directly from a digital camera without the need for a PC.

In a speed test, the device took 28 seconds to print a standard A4 image and according to the writer the "detail was clear and colours accurately portrayed".

"The choice of sources to print from and the excellent prints make the Lexmark X4875 a device we’d happily recommend," said the reviewer.

"Good design and wireless technology are an added bonus."

In a separate review, Lexmark’s X6575 was described as "reasonable value" by Simon Williams from trustedreviews.com.

Epson S20 described as ‘value for money’

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

The Epson S20 has been described as an "ideal value-for-money" printer in an interview.

Carrie-Ann Skinner from PC Advisor says that the printer is a "useful A4 inkjet" that can print good pictures despite not being marketed as a photo printer.

One major negative point identified by the reviewer is the fact that the S20 does not come packaged with a USB cable to connect it to the PC.

In a speed test, the S20 took three minutes to print a 6×4-inch photo and over five minutes for a 17MB photo, which was "longer" than desired according to the writer.

"Epson uses pigment-based inks with a protective resin coating to prevent smudging and water damage," explains the reviewer.

"We tested the effectiveness of this and found our prints touch-dry as soon as they came out of the printer and no adverse effects when we spilled half a glass of water on them."

Photographyblog.com recently claimed that the Epson Stylus Photo R2880 printer "should be at the top" of people’s shopping list.
