Mesh 8400 PC ‘best desktop under £500′

Monday, June 30th, 2008

PC Pro has named Mesh Computers’ Pulse 8400 PC as the best desktop machine on the market for under £500.

The desktop has been awarded the PC Labs Winner title ahead of the Eclipse Zenith i82n98GTX, which has also been highly recommended.
Mesh’s 8400 features a 3GHz processor and a Nvidia GeForce 9000 series graphics card.

The PC was also commended for the inclusion of a set of Logitech S220 speakers and its monitor which offers "crisp detail and lots of brightness".

Mike Jennings, reviewer for PC Pro, said: "The Mesh is one of the better performers this month and a well-rounded system, thanks to the quick processor and excellent graphics card.

"The roomy hard disk and speakers also add value to an excellent all-round package. It’s a worthy Labs champion and deserving of your £500."

PC Pro also named Dell’s Inspiron 1525 as the number one laptop which costs under £300.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 is a ‘cracking little camera’

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-W300 has been described as a "cracking little camera" in a recent review.

Neil Bennett, of Digital Arts online, said the pocket-sized camera was "small considering its functionality" and due to this two of the buttons on the reverse of the device were "hard to get to".

"The W300’s 13.6 megapixel sensor produces very detailed images and the SuperSteadyShot image stabilisation system is excellent," wrote the reviewer.

He added: "The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300’s output is among the very best of the pocket-sized cameras we’ve looked at recently."

The camera uses a Memory Stick Pro Duo unlike most manufacturers who use SD cards, which Mr Bennett described as "inconvenient" because the former cost much more than SD cards.

Computer Active recently said that Sony’s A350 digital camera was "highly recommended" for consumers that wanted a camera that "does the job from the get-go".

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Brother’s DCP-7045N is ‘an effective printer’

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Office products manufacturer Brother’s DCP-7045N has been described as a "very down to earth but effective" multifunction device.

Robin Morris from PC Advisor says that the printer comes with some "very decent" management software so that its usage can be monitored when used on a network.

The DCP-7045N can hold up to 250 sheets of paper and prints at an average of 17 pages per minute. The writer did commend that the text quality was "cleaner and sharper" than many other printers on the market.

Mr Morris also praised the scanner function on the device, saying that the reproductions were "reasonably faithful".

"The Brother DCP-7045N isn’t so great on graphics, and while it’s fine for presentations, photos lack detail. That shouldn’t perhaps be too surprising though, and few users will buy a mono laser for graphics work," the reviewer added.

Brother has recently announced its first Professional Series of colour inkjet multifunction printers, which are aimed at small businesses and office environments.

Olympus Mju 1020 is “delightfully straightforward”

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Olympus’s Mju 1020 digital camera has been described as "delightfully straightforward" in a review.

Katrina Putker, writing for Digital Camera Review, said that the Mju 1020 is a "great option" for consumers looking for a low-fuss compact camera.

The device weighs 135g and features a 7 x optical zoom with 10.1 megapixels.

Ms Putker writes that she had "slight difficulty" balancing the exposure when taking a shot and recommended that users employ the shadow adjustment technology that is provided in the camera to get the best picture.

"In-built technologies ensure that point-and-shoot operation is virtually failsafe so for those wanting to let the camera do the majority of the work, the Mju 1020 is bound to suit," concluded Ms Putker.

Olympus recently launched its new digital SLR camera, the E-520, which features a range of interchangeable lens types.

Canon has launched a new portable inkjet printer aimed at mobile business people and "busy students".

The Pixma iP100 is the successor to the iP90V and the company claims that it will provide professional-quality documents from any location.

The iP100 also has Bluetooth connectivity so prints can be delivered wirelessly from a laptop or mobile phone.

KC Lu, Pixma brand manager for Canon Australia, said: "Flexibility with work and study is now more important than ever, making the Pixma iP100 a valuable printing solution for our busy lives.

"Its sleek design and print quality allows for easy portability and endless possibilities wherever you are, whether at home, hotel room or car."

Windows 7 ‘to be released in 2010′

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

A letter sent to Microsoft customers has reportedly confirmed that the next version of Windows will be released in 2010.

The letter, sent by the company’s senior vice president Bill Weghte, was entitled An Update on the Windows Roadmap and explained that research found that customers "want a more predictable Windows release schedule".

It said in the letter that Windows 7 would be delivered approximately three years after the January 2007 release of Vista, which hit the market five years after its XP operating system predecessor.

"You’ve also let us know you don’t want to face the kinds of incompatibility challenges with the next version of Windows you might have experienced early with Windows Vista," added Mr Weghte.

Recent research found that only eight per cent of software developers in the US were currently working on software for Microsoft Vista, reported vnunet.com.

Lexmark showcases new wireless printers

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Lexmark is showcasing its new wireless inkjet printers at the Digital Experience! conference in New York.

The manufacturer is revealing two wireless all-in-one devices, which it claims can help family members to "settle in separate corners with laptops", chat, surf the web, listen to music and "share a printer".

Lexmark’s X9575 Wireless All-in-One is a professional printer which can "respond to the demanding needs of small office and home office", according to the company.

The X4650 is designed for use around the home and Lexmark claims it can "make wireless printing easier and more affordable".

"A wireless printer can handle all incoming print requests from any room in the house, making it incredibly easy to share while saving you time and money," the company added.

Lexmark’s C935DN colour laser printer was recently described as a "curate’s egg" in a review.

Rob Henry from Macworld said that the printer had "a few shortcomings" that needed solving before the printer could be recommended.
